Those shadows will suck you into a whole new world. But what really gives away the doggo is not a helpful Lassie are the shadows, darker than dark, swirling about the killer canine. Even without looking inside its muzzle, I know viscous slobber covers several rows of razor-sharp teeth. It’s three times as wide as my hips, and I’m, as my daughter’s generation puts it, “thicc.” Under a sleek coat of slate-gray fur, sinewy muscles ripple. The arch of its back reaches about as high as my chest, and I’m about 5'6", not tall but not short either. Besides the glowing red eyes, there’s no mistaking the hellhound for a lost pooch or a coyote on the prowl. The reek of sulfur was what had given away the hellhound circling my neighbor’s begonias long before I spot the glowing red headlights where eyeballs should be. Luck is on my side, sort of, as I am downwind of the monster, not the other way around. After pressing the bud in my right ear, the music ceases. I stop dead in my tracks, my heart thudding faster than the beat in my earbuds. Long Island reunites readers with Eilis Lacey, 20 years after Brooklyn. Colm Tóibín has written a sequel to Brooklyn, which won the 2009 Costa Novel Award and whose 2015 film adaptation by Nick Hornby starred Saoirse Ronan and was directed by John Crowley. Things aren’t easy: Eleanor is bullied at school and then goes home to a threatening family situation Park’s parents do not approve of Eleanor’s awkward ways. Their relationship grows gradually-making each other mixed tapes (it is 1986 after all) and discussing X-Men characters-until they both find themselves looking forward to the bus ride more than any other part of the day. They sit in awkward silence every day until Park notices that Eleanor is reading his comics over his shoulder he begins to slide them closer to her side of the seat and thus begins their love story. She ends up sitting next to Park on the bus, whose tendencies towards comic books don’t jibe with the rest of his family’s love of sports. Eleanor is the new girl in town and her wild red hair and patchwork outfits are not helping her blend in. It is written about teens, sure, but the themes are so universal that anyone who survived high school will relate to the lives of the two protagonists. An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: While Eleanor & Park is technically classified as YA lit and has a cutesy cover, don’t let the stigma of “books for teens” fool or deter you.
